Whether you’re a business or student, there’s a lot to be gained from taking part in a Development Project. In this section, we’ll share a few examples that show the ‘before and after’.
As you can see, everybody wins in their own particular way...
Skills You Need: promoting digital downloads
Skills You Need is a website offering free advice to help readers “make the most of everyday life”. The site offers personal and professional tips for a broad readership, as well as niche content for job-seekers, managers, students, teachers and parents.
All content on the site was free, with funding coming exclusively through banner advertising. Director Matthew Scott had considered selling premium downloads, but the site had no e-commerce functionality. He was left with a choice of meeting high development costs or taking the DIY route and facing a steep learning curve.
Matthew approached us and we put him in touch with Henry Young – a final year student who was keen to boost his employment prospects by gaining some real world experience.
Henry set about creating a bespoke, integrated e-commerce and user-content management system – a ‘retro-fit’ for the site that equipped it to process and fulfil its own orders.
Matthew recalls: “When Henry began, he brought along some new, exiting ideas. I was surprised at his level of dedication to the project!”
The project was a success for both. Henry, who’s now working at publishing unit Canolfan Peniarth, says: ““Having experience of the developer/client relationship before going out into the working world was incredibly beneficial. I was given a large amount of freedom on the project, and I gained a great deal of new technical knowledge along the way.”
Meanwhile, Skills You Need has an ever-expanding content library, and the facility to keep adding new digital titles for sale and download.
Matthew Scott concludes: “I would have never got to the position where I am with the business right now if it had not been for the assistance that Henry gave us. I would have no hesitation in recommending the option to others as it’s really helped us a tremendous amount”.
