Made In Wales Awards 2014

Last night saw the Made In Wales 2014 awards ceremony at the Mercure Holand House Hotel in Cardiff.  A broad range of thriving Welsh companies (from aviation technology to breweries) gathered for the highly successful annual event run by Insider magazine.

Software Alliance Wales were proud to sponsor the award for the best Technology company. The SAW team attended the evening and Project Director Dr Neal Harmann was on hand to present the award.  The winners of this years Technology award were Baglan based IT company Vizolution who specialise in screen-sharing and remote working software solutions.

Green Manufacturer Award
Winner: SPTS Technologies
Newport-headquartered SPTS, which makes equipment for the microelectronics industry, has made big savings by going green. One judge said: "They've really embraced it. A fantastic story."

Manufacturing Innovation Award
Winner: Reid Lifting
Reid Lifting has developed a portable, easy set-up lifting system called Porta-Gantry Rapide. It has brought in big orders for this Chepstow company. Judges said: "They have the right attitude."

Technology Award
Winner:
Vizolution
This award is for the company with the biggest impact in the areas of electronics, software, computer hardware or telecommunications. Port Talbot-based Vizolution's system enables face-to-face interactions online with judges praising its international potential.

Food and Drink Award

The judges praised this Newport brewer for reaching out to consumers directly in a growing but competitive market sector.

Creative Design Award

One Nine Design
One Nine Design has developed a Raspberry Pi computer case. This Bridgend company was praised for its "commitment to continued development and innovation as well as local manufacturing".

New Product Award
Winner:
BBI Solutions
This award is given to the company behind the most impressive new product made, designed or developed in Wales. BBI Solutions' synthetic Rubella IgM serum eliminates the need to take blood serum from a rubella sufferer. "It could have a global impact," said the judges.

Apprenticeship Scheme of the Year

GE Aviation Wales
GE invests £1.2m in its apprenticeship scheme every year. One judge praised its "outstanding investment" and emphasis on fitness and health.

Exporter of the Year

Green Light Products
This award is for the company deemed by the judges to be the most prolific exporter of products made in Wales. Judges were impressed with the way Green Light went from a standing start in 2009 to export 65 per cent of its packaging materials.

Advanced Manufacturer Award

This award is for the company deemed by the judges to be the most forward-looking, investing in advanced manufacturing processes, techniques and equipment. Judges were impressed with Axiom's system which enabled a customer to test and control the quality of its medical equipment.

Manufacturer of the Year
Winner:
IQE
IQE, based in Cardiff, is now the market leader in providing wafers to the wireless chip industry, with a global market share of 50 to 60 per cent. It now plans to replicate this success in other industry sectors.
